IPL 2027: 3 Players who are frontrunners to lead Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians (MI) will be having a lot to think about when the top brass meets in England to review their poor Indian Premier League season in IPL 2026. MI finished 9th on the points table with only 4 wins from 14 games and 8 points to their name.

Reports have confirmed that MI captain Hardik Pandya has already parted ways with the franchise. MI reached the playoffs in IPL 2025 after Hardik Pandya took over as captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. However, the remainder of the two seasons saw them finishing 10th and 9th, respectively, and this means MI are now looking for a new captain going into the IPL 2027 season.

Here are 3 players who are frontrunners to lead the Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2027:

3. Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah captained the Mumbai Indians for the first time in IPL 2026, when Hardik Pandya was absent. He admitted that it was a one-off thing, but no one can doubt his leadership qualities. He has led India in Tests and T20Is with success, and MI will look at making Bumrah the new captain.

However, Bumrah, who has 187 wickets in 158 IPL games, has a fragile body, and IPL 2026 was a poor one by his standards. Bumrah managed only 4 wickets in 14 games, and many attributed it to fatigue as Bumrah was coming off a T20 World Cup win for India. It remains to be seen whether MI punts on Bumrah for captaincy, given how important he is to them as a bowler.

2. Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma, the young batter, is one of the front-runners to become the Mumbai Indians captain. He has 1858 runs in 68 IPL games for Mumbai Indians since making his debut in 2022. He has scored one century and 15 fifties as well. Recently, Varma was made India’s T20I vice-captain, and even MI might want someone who can serve as captain for a long time, like Rohit Sharma did. However, his inexperience as a leader is the biggest hurdle in him becoming captain.

1. Suryakumar Yadav

India’s T20 World Cup 2026-winning former captain Suryakumar Yadav would be the best choice for the Mumbai Indians as their next captain. Suryakumar Yadav has found new fame in the IPL since joining the MI franchise in 2015 and has played a huge part in the franchise’s multiple IPL wins. Surya Gas 4581 runs in 179 IPL games with 2 centuries and has led MI as vice-captain to Rohit Sharma.

Suryakumar Yadav might be the perfect choice for MI to make captain, as then they can have Tilak Varma as vice-captain, and he can learn the ropes of captaincy for the next IPL cycle before taking over the reins. Suryakumar has proven himself to be an excellent captain with his success for the Indian team and is the best option for MI.
