England limited-overs captain Harry Brook has asserted that he is not sure about the Indian talismanic opening batter Rohit Sharma’s retirement from international cricket after the Lord’s fixture on Sunday, July 19.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on the eve of the final ODI at Lord’s on Saturday, Brook has lauded the Hitman, calling him a phenomenal player for many years. However, he wasn’t sure of Rohit’s retirement speculations.
“I’m not sure what’s been said about Rohit Sharma’s retirement. He’s been a phenomenal player for many years, and it’s great to see him still involved in the game,” said Brook in the pre-match press conference.
On Thursday, reports in the Indian media revealed that the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, had informed Rohit that the Lord’s ODI would be his last to give enough chances to young opening batters like Yashasvi Jaiswa.
On Friday, while speaking to the reporters, the BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that there have been no discussions with Rohit on him playing his last match at Lord’s, adding that Rohit will continue to represent the nation as long as he is in the scheme of things.
“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia said in a statement to the media.
“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team, and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” the BCCI Secretary added.
