Former Indian off-spinner and commentator Harbhajan Singh has heaped praise on the Indian Test captain Shubman Gill, terming him a captain with a very good cricket brain and a top cricketer.
Speaking in an interview with Sports Now Hindi, Bhajji has asserted that Gill had already proved his mettle as a captain and as a batter in the overseas tour in England in Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s absence.
“Coming to Gill not having had a lot of success, I feel his credit, his mettle, was seen in his captaincy in England. It was a small example of what he can do as a captain, a leader, and a batter. He scored more runs than anybody. The way the team performed there and the mindset, I think I rate him up because of that. It looked like the team was committed. A high or low patch will keep coming, but overall, I think he is someone who’s got a very good cricket brain and is a top cricketer,” Harbhajan Singh said in an interview with Sports Now Hindi.
Team India, led by Gill, will next take on Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series, starting on Saturday, August 15, in Galle. India are fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka are sixth on 41.67.
A series win in Sri Lanka would give India a useful boost in the WTC 2025-27 standings. A 1-0 victory would give them 16 points and take their tally to 68, lifting their points percentage to 51.51. A 2-0 series win would improve the tally to 76 from 11 Tests and their points percentage to 57.58.
India’s updated squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, Sarfaraz Khan
