Former Pakistan speedster Mohammad Amir has confirmed that his days with Pakistan cricket are now officially over, adding that he is now a British local, having secured United Kingdom citizenship.
Speaking in an interview with Furqian Bhatti on the latter’s YouTube channel, Amir disclosed that his Pakistan chapter has now come to a close. Notably, Amir made his international debut in June 2009.
“I am a British local now. When you play in competitions such as the County Championship and The Hundred as a local player, you have to sign a document stating that you cannot play for another country as a local. So, the Pakistan chapter I had before is now closed,” Amir revealed in an interview with cricket YouTuber Furqan Bhatti.
Amir played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is for Pakistan. He was banned from all forms of the game for five years in 2011 for spot-fixing. He made his comeback to international cricket in 2016. Amir last featured for Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
“It has been a great honour to play for Pakistan across all three formats. I know this is a difficult decision, but I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan cricket to new heights,” Amir said in an official release issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
“I would like to thank the PCB for always extending the much-needed support over the years and I look forward to watching the team excel. I would also like to thank Pakistan fans for always supporting me throughout my career,” he added.
For the uninitiated, Amir featured in three World Cups and was Pakistan’s top wicket-taker at the ICC ODI World Cup 2019, ending the tournament with 17 wickets.
