Reports have stated that Abhishek Sharma wants to leave the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise before the upcoming IPL 2027 season. With Pat Cummins unlikely to play IPL 2027 due to international commitments, SRH are likely to appoint Ishan Kishan as their captain.
Abhishek Sharma is reportedly miffed at being passed off for captaincy, despite being SRH’s star player since the 2019 IPL. There are multiple franchises already in line to trade in Abhishek Sharma for next year’s IPL, and we take a look at three top contenders.
Here are the 3 teams that can target Abhishek Sharma in a trade with SRH before IPL 2027:
3. Mumbai Indians
There is no secret that Mumbai Indians want someone young to take over from Rohit Sharma as the opener for the franchise. I have struggled in the past 3-4 seasons and last won an IPL in 2020. Rohit Sharma is not getting any younger, and while Abhishek Sharma might not get the captaincy position, he yearns for Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma in the fray. Abhishek will have a cemented place at the top in MI for years to come.
2. Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders is one franchise that is looking for a captaincy after the retirement of Ajinkya Rahane. While there is an option of Rinku Singh taking over, KKR might want someone who is a proven performer and also gets them a permanent opener at the top. KKR had an issue with their opening combination. Abhishek Sharma will get an environment where he can excel and possibly become a captain as well.
1. Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings, if they can land Abhishek Sharma, will have an amazing combination at the top with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh in the top three. However, with Shreyas Iyer being the captain of the Punjab Kings, who has done very well, Abhishek Sharma might not get a chance to lead the team in IPL, something which is the reason he wants to part ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad. But PBKS will be his home franchise, and the New Chandigarh stadium is where he recently won the Shere Punjab T20 tournament.
