ODI World Cup 2027: 5 Indian players who could be key to India’s title hopes

ODI World Cup 2027: 5 Indian players who could be key to India’s title hopes

India’s schedule for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 was confirmed as the ICC unveiled the venues and schedule for the entire tournament. It will be played from October 7 to November 21 next year. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will host the games at eleven venues.

India has been placed in Group A with Afghanistan, Australia, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe and Qualifier A and will begin the tournament against Australia on October 7. Today we will take a look at 5 Indian players who will be key to India’s hopes of winning the ICC World Cup 2027.

Here are the 5 Indian players who could be key to India’s title hopes in the ODI World Cup 2027:

5. Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya’s importance was highlighted when India lost to Australia in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad. India missed an extra batting option and an extra bowler when he got injured in the game against Bangladesh. Hardik Pandya brings balance to the Indian XI, allowing them to play an extra batter or a bowler.

Hardik Pandya has good numbers with 1904 runs and 91 wickets in the ODI format. He has 11 half-centuries in ODIs, with a strike rate of 110.89, and his best bowling figures are 4/24 and an economy of 5.60. Given his amazing athletic abilities in the field, Hardik Pandya becomes very important to the Indian team’s plans.

4. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill will lead the Indian team for the first time in an ICC ODI World Cup next year and will have a few ODIs in hand to prepare his plans. Gill is set to open the innings with Rohit Sharma and has shown that he is in prime form in the ODI format. He has 3712 runs in 69 ODIs at an average of 65.12 with 11 centuries and 20 fifties, with the best score of 223* and a strike rate of 103.45.

He loves playing on bouncy tracks that help him play his touch shots with ease. Gill is at ease with the pull and hook shot and will love playing in South Africa against pacers. He is adept at playing spinners as well, be it in attacking games or defence. His captaincy will enhance with time, and he should have his plans set for the ICC World Cup 2027 to lead from the front with the bat and as captain.

3. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma will be 40 when the ICC World Cup 2027 begins, and it will be mostly his final outing for India in a blue jersey. Rohit Sharma recently showed that despite going through a bit of a lull, he will bounce back when the teams need him to score big. He has changed his game a bit after being removed from captaincy and now plays his way into form.

South Africa is a place where Rohit Sharma doesn’t have a very good record in ODIs, and despite his 35 centuries and 12,000-plus runs in ODIs, it will be a challenge for Mumbai to end his amazing ODI career on a high and fulfil his dream of winning a 50-over World Cup as well.

2. Jasprit Bumrah

India has a cheat code when it comes to bowling, and his name is Jasprit Bumrah. The pacer is lethal with the new ball upfront, in the middle, and then with the old ball in the death overs, especially after the change in rule for balls. He has 151 wickets in 91 ODIs at an economy of 4.58 and an average of 23.74, with the best bowling figures of 6/19.

Bumrah has to be used very intelligently by Shubman Gill given his fitness issues, and Bumrah will deliver a wicket in need of the team. He has done that countless times and will bowl even better on the bouncy and seaming pitches in South Africa. Bumrah will lead an Indian pace attack in the ODI World Cup 2027, and I expect him to do it well.

1. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has confirmed that the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2027 will be his last outing for India, and he is looking to end it on a high note. Kohli has already won an ODI World Cup in 2011 and has also won two ICC Champions Trophies and one T20 World Cup as well in his illustrious career.

Kohli recently became only the second batter to go past the 15,000-run mark in ODIs after Sachin Tendulkar and is in pursuit of the 100 international centuries mark, as he has 86 tons in all international cricket. Kohli has been in tremendous form ever since retiring from T20Is and Tests, and something has freed him up. His strike rate has increased, and he is consistently scoring big runs. Expect Kohli to do well in the ODI World Cup as well, given his very good record in the format in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
