The 12th edition of (Caribbean Premiere League) CPL 2024 kicked off with great triumph at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. The opening match was held between St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Barbuda Falcons. It was an enthralling match with the final ball victory of St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.
A significant cameo at-bat later in the game was made by South African pace merchant Anrich Nortje, who skittled Falcons opener Teddy Bishop for just one run after Patriots captain Andre Fletcher properly called the coin and decided to field first. Then, Fakhar Zaman showed off his powerful shoulders by smashing five fours and two sixes en route to a 43 off 32 balls score, with Kofi James providing reliable assistance with a 22 off 24.
CPL 2024, Match 1 review:
Sam Billings of England was well taken by Odean Smith at deep midwicket on the boundary line, displaying superb footwork and quick thinking as he juggled the catch to himself on the boundary edge. The highlight of the Falcons innings, however, belonged to 17-year-old Jewel Andrew, who struck 50 off just 30 balls to set a difficult 163-4 total for the Patriots to chase. Andrew displayed maturity beyond his years as well as an impressive talent.
After Kyle Mayers scored a vital 39 off 24 balls from number three, he was named Player of the Match. However, with plenty left to do, the Patriots were at 133/6 after Mayers was removed by Mohammad Amir in the 16th over. The Patriot's lower order was able to cross the finish line and record a victory to start their campaign, despite wickets falling rapidly, including two in the penultimate over.
A thrilling encounter progressed to the penultimate over and then the final delivery, with an ebb and flow of runs and wickets. After just one game, Nortje showed composure to get the necessary single off Roshon Primus, giving the Patriots a thrilling victory that tied their tournament win total from the previous year.
