The Indian team suffered a humiliating 2-1 ODI series loss to New Zealand. This was the first time New Zealand won an ODI series in India, with another unwanted record being broken under Gautam Gambhir’s reign as India head coach.

Shubman Gill, who returned for this ODI series as India captain after missing the last ODI series against South Africa due to injury, suffered his second ODI series loss as India skipper. There were some other players as well, whose non-performance triggered a debate about whether they should continue in India’s ODI team going forward.

The team's balance and individual performances were called into question. Their place in the ODI setup has been called into question due to their inconsistent batting, lack of effect from some veteran stars, and dubious contributions during crucial periods.

Here are the 3 Indian players who should be axed from the ODI team:

1. Ravindra Jadeja

As India gets ready for the ICC 50-over World Cup next year, Ravindra Jadeja's recent performance has come under scrutiny. The all-rounder has had difficulty making an impression with the bat or the ball in the previous two ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand.

Jadeja failed to establish consistency in the middle order, scoring fewer than 100 runs in both series. His bowling performances have been as disappointing; he has only taken one wicket against South Africa and none against New Zealand. With Axar Patel ready and raring to take his place, Ravindra Jadeja might be the first name omitted from India’s ODI plans.

2. Nitish Kumar Reddy

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s spot in India’s ODI setup has come under question despite his valiant fifty in the third and final ODI between India and New Zealand in Indore. His influence in the 50-over format has been little, even though he has been a member of the national setup for some time. Reddy played in both the most recent home series against New Zealand and the away series against Australia.

Additionally, he has had few and mostly poor ball-related opportunities. Reddy's prolonged tenure seems more transitional than performance-driven, given Hardik Pandya's gradual recovery and the role of workload management.

3. Prasidh Krishna

The two ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand expose a huge hole in India’s cricketing armor: their fast-bowling backups are rare to nil. With Mohammed Shami being ignored consistently, Prasidh Krishna was preferred as the third seam option along with Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Mohammed Siraj.

Prasidh Krishna has been supported by the team management for the past two home series. Despite taking wickets, the pacer's impact has been uneven. His propensity to leak runs, which gives opposing hitters momentum, is also reflected in a high economy rate. Krishna will need to have a very good IPL to continue being in plans for India for the ICC World Cup 2027; otherwise, there will be other options for the Indian team to pick from.
