Despite its reputation as a gentleman's game, cricket has a lengthy history of psychological warfare known as sledging that goes hand in hand with the immaculate whites and courteous handshakes. Sledging, which is used to make opponents uncomfortable with scathing comments, jeers, and mental games, has become a crucial aspect of cricket at all levels.
Some of the best cricket players have used words just as skillfully as their bats and balls over the years, showcasing lighthearted banter, irritated remarks, and strategic tactics. Here are five such incidents.
1. Rishabh Pant vs Tim Paine
For the first time in history, India made history by defeating Australia in Down Under. During that time, Rishabh Pant's batting and his antics with Australian captain Tim Paine also made news. Paine began the Melbourne Test by attempting to pull Pant's leg on the third day.
"You can come over for dinner. Do you babysit? I’ll take my wife to the movies, you can look after the kids?”, Paine had stated.
In the last innings of the Melbourne game, Pant also got some of his own back when he declared that it would take "nothing special" to get rid of Paine, whom he also called a "temporary captain."
2. Robin Smith vs Merv Hughes
As fighters designed specifically for one another, Merv Hughes and Robin Smith certainly relished a series of cricket matches. The moustachioed craziness of Hughes, who bullied and threatened opposing batsmen as he charged in to bowl like an uncontrollable freight train.
With his trademark grill-less helmet, Smith's moustachioed coolness stares down fast bowlers, savaging anything shorter than a length with tremendous force.
Hughes responded, "You can't f***ing bat," after the English batsman missed a ball during a memorable match, according to the Independent. Smith chose to reply, sending the subsequent ball to the boundary and saying, "Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f***ing bat and you can't f***ing bowl."
3. Ricky Ponting vs Shaun Pollock
Having tough talks in the field has always been a belief of the pacers. Meanwhile, Shaun Pollock and Ricky Ponting had a similar confrontation during a tight match between South Africa and Australia.
Pollock mockingly told Ponting, "It's red, round and weighs about five ounces," after he had sent the ball past his attempts on a few deliveries without making contact. "You know what it looks like, now go find it," Ponting remarked after hitting the following ball out of the ground.
4. Jimmy Ormond vs Mark Waugh
Mark Waugh was at slip as James Ormond came out to bat during the 2001 Ashes final test at the Oval. With his trademark humour, Waugh didn't think twice about asking Ormond why he was there.
Steve Waugh's brother Mark Waugh said, "Look who it is," after giving him a quick glance. What are you doing out here, buddy? You are simply not talented enough to play for England.
"Maybe not, but at least I'm the best player in my family," Ormond said, dishing him about his brother and captain, Steve Waugh.
5. Sachin Tendulkar vs Abdul Qadir
Sachin Tendulkar made his Indian cricket team debut against Pakistan when he was just 16 years old. The Pakistan Cricket Board then arranged a 20-over exhibition match in which Tendulkar displayed his extraordinary skills.
Pakistan had scored 157 runs on the scoreboard after batting first. After dropping a few early wickets, India struggled during their pursuit. But Tendulkar quickly established himself by hitting two sixes in a single over Mushtaq Ahmed's bowling. When the veteran Abdul Qadir noticed this, he went up to Tendulkar and said, "Why are you hitting kids? Try hitting me."
The renowned Indian batsman responded astoundingly, hitting the seasoned spinner for four sixes in a single over.
