When considering the red-ball format, Virat Kohli is regarded as one of the greatest captains in Indian cricket history. He made a huge difference between 2015 and 2021. India won the away Border-Gavaskar Trophy series twice in a row under one of the best captains in history, and he won the ICC Test Mace five times in a row.
Under Virat Kohli's leadership, several players made their debuts; some went on to become among the best in cricket, while others sank into obscurity following a bright beginning. Here, we examine five players who were unable to obtain many opportunities while serving as captains.
1. Murali Vijay
He opened for either Gautam Gambhir or Virender Sehwag in the early years of his career. Vijay rose to the top, though, and was selected as India's first-choice Test opener in 2013. At the top, he was a dependable choice who often scored runs. He received runs both domestically and abroad.
However, Vijay was fired in 2018 after only a few setbacks. Except for Virat Kohli, no one in India's weak batting order was able to handle the challenge abroad. However, following a string of poor performances, Vijay was fired.
2. Amit Mishra
The fact that Amit Mishra did not play in any ODI matches after collecting five wickets in his previous ODI is simply astounding. Mishra won both Player of the Match and Player of the Series in the 2016 home ODI series against New Zealand, which was captained by MS Dhoni.
But Mishra was surprisingly dropped when Kohli assumed the limited-overs captaincy in early 2017, and he never played another ODI. At the age of 33, Mishra declared his intention to retire. It is still among the most unreasonable and unfair things that may happen to a player.
3. Manish Pandey
Being in and out of the Indian white-ball teams is something Manish Pandey would undoubtedly be familiar with. No captain the Karnataka player has ever played for has ever supported him or given him a long run.
In 2008, he and Virat Kohli participated in the Under-19 World Cup. In 2015, he was eventually given the India cap in Zimbabwe. He prevented India from losing the ODI series in January 2016 by scoring an incredible century in Sydney. However, despite India's shaky middle order, Pandey never had a proper run.
4. Karun Nair
Consider Karun Nair, India's only second-over Test triple century, who may have dealt with the sadness and annoyance of being treated harshly despite setting a world record, while discussing unjust expulsions and a lack of opportunities.
In just his third Test match of his career, Nair scored a triple hundred against England in Chennai in December 2016. Nair was dropped completely and never given another chance after just four innings, all against the Australian bowling attack on difficult turning Indian surfaces!
5. Ambati Rayudu
One of the most well-known players in Indian cricket, Ambati Rayudu, has neither been permitted nor able to have a lengthy international career. Rayudu, one of the most accomplished and successful batsmen in the IPL, made his debut in 2013 under Dhoni, but he didn't truly establish himself in the team until 2018.
Before the 2019 World Cup, Rayudu had solidified his position as the number four batsman. However, following a poor series against Australia at home, the management and selectors surprisingly overlooked him in favour of the "three-dimensional" Vijay Shankar. Rayudu was compelled to quit international cricket due to his dissatisfaction and ignorance.
