AB de Villiers slams IPL teams for missing out on Dewald Brevis

Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers took a cheeky dig at IPL teams after Dewald Brevis smashed the second-fastest T20I century for the Proteas in the second T20I against Australia in Darwin on 12 August 2025.

Brevis reached his century in just 41 balls and stayed unbeaten on 125, helping South Africa post their highest total against Australia in T20Is – 218/7. In reply, Australia were bowled out for 165. Brevis was named Player of the Match.

After that stunning knock, de Villiers took to his X account and posted: "There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. Mind boggling that he wasn’t picked up at all! To think that he came in as an injury sub.”

Brevis went unsold during the mega auction before IPL 2025, with no franchise showing interest. Later, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed him as a replacement for injured Gurjapneet Singh. In six matches, he scored 225 runs, including two fifties, at a strike rate of 180.00.

During the post-match presentation, Brevis spoke about his innings. (On having the highest score for South Africa in men's T20Is) “I have not really thought about it, but extremely grateful. Just happy we won today, great to be out here on the winning side. To celebrate that final wicket - that was the ultimate (feeling) today. You want to win, so be able to come back strong after the first game is fantastic. Everyone played their part. We took our catches, bowlers nailed their plans, and good to see it all (pan out). They (the Australian batters) are great players, they hit the ball hard and over the ropes, so we have to be on it, especially in this format. We played well today, so that's great.”

Skipper Aiden Markram also heaped praise on Brevis. “It was up there (with the best). The boys were just down there laughing. He hits it miles, quite a freakish display tonight, quite chuffed that the world got to see what he can do. He has played a lot of T20s around the world - he is still quite young, he will only get better.”
