Bengal skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran was involved in an odd dismissal on the first day of the Ranji Trophy 2025–2026 match between Bengal and Services in Kalyani, which has caused controversy on the domestic circuit. Easwaran was run out on the last delivery of the 41st over while batting fluently on 81 because he made a mistake in judgment and thought the ball was dead.
Sudip Chatterjee, his partner, played a full-length delivery straight back toward bowler Aditya Kumar, setting off the incident. The bowler's fingers are said to have been touched by the ball before it bounced into the stumps. Easwaran emerged from his crease and made his way to the pavilion, believing that the over was finished and that drinks were being called. The Services team appealed since the ball was legally still in play, even though he wasn't trying to steal a run. The third umpire then declared him out.

Against Services, Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran (81) left his crease thinking the over was over and walked out for drinks. The ball deflected off the bowler's fingers and rolled back onto the stumps, resulting in a run out. pic.twitter.com/p7AIDmpPNk
Aditya Kumar, a bowler for the Services, bowled a full-length ball on the last ball of the 41st over, which Chatterjee pushed back in his direction. Easwaran instinctively left his crease and moved forward to gulp water, figuring the over was finished, and the ball was dead.
The ball grazed Aditya Kumar's fingers as he tried to gather the return, deflecting onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. Already, Easwaran had moved far beyond his crease. Even the bowler didn't realise what had happened until the stumps were smashed. The on-field umpires referred the verdict upstairs after Services Tea filed an appeal. Easwaran was declared run out by the third umpire in accordance with the rules of the game.
Bengal had amassed a dominant 340/4 in 86 overs before the end of Day 1 at the Kalyani Stadium. Chatterjee and Sumanta Gupta won the last session, but Anustup Majumdar (27) and Shahbaz Ahmed (38) made substantial efforts before leaving. With Gupta batting steadily at 31 going into Day 2, the pair has already added an undefeated 73-run stand for the fifth wicket.
