Shubman Gill was named the new captain of India's ODI team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday, October 4. Even though Rohit won the ICC Champions Trophy in his final series as captain of India, the right-handed batsman from Punjab took his spot. His 13-year-old went viral when Rohit was disqualified as India's ODI captain. Shubman was chosen as the ODI captain because it was "practically impossible" to continue with three different leaders across forms, according to Ajit Agarkar, chief selector for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Despite leading India to victory in the Champions Trophy in March, Rohit's removal as captain saddened several supporters. He was kept on as a specialist batter for the tour of Australia with his longtime friend Virat Kohli, despite the senior batter being relegated. One of Rohit's older tweets from over 13 years ago went viral on social media following his sudden snub. It says, “End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77)…"

For those who are unaware, Gill wears Team India's No. 77 ODI jersey, while Rohit's is number 45. According to a lot of social media fans, Rohit foresaw his future as India's ODI captain. Rohit is still included in India's ODI team for the forthcoming three-match series in Australia, even though he was fired as captain.

In response to this tweet, Rohit's old teammates from India, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, and Praveen Kumar, praised the veteran. Shreyas Iyer was given the position of vice-captain, while Shubman was named captain. Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are not included in the squad; KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel are the designated wicketkeepers. However, Pant might not be ready for the tour in time.
