Sophie Devine has been replaced as the new all-format captain of New Zealand Women by Amelia Kerr. The 25-year-old will be the full-time captain of the WODI and WT20I squads. This follows Devine's resignation from her position after the October 2025 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup. In the past, Kerr has led the team in two WODIs and two WT20Is.

Since making her international debut in 2016, the 25-year-old has played in 84 One-Day Internationals and 88 Twenty20 Internationals for New Zealand. In ODIs, she has taken 106 wickets at 30.61 and amassed 2,304 runs at an average of 41.14. Kerr has captured 95 wickets at a remarkable economy rate of 6.09 while scoring 1,453 runs at a strike rate of 109.74 in Twenty20 Internationals. Having led Wellington Blaze to back-to-back Super Smash championships in the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons, Kerr also offers leadership experience.

Amelia Kerr's New Role:

With Kerr's hiring, New Zealand cricket enters a pivotal three-year phase. Later this year, they will defend their ICC Women's T20 World Cup title in England. The 2028 T20 World Cup, the Los Angeles Olympics, and the 2027 ICC Women's T20 Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka are the other major ICC events.

ESPNcricinfor quotes Kerr saying, "The captaincy doesn't change who I am, I am still the same person and will give everything I can to lead this group and hopefully bring our country success. One of my favourite quotes is: 'He aha te mea nui o te ao? He Tāngata, He Tāngata, He Tāngata. We are people first. As a group, we look out for each other, we celebrate each other's success, and we represent our people. Encouraging others and building belief around us so we can all be the best we can be both as people and as cricketers."

Ben Sawyer, the head coach of New Zealand, commended Amelia Kerr as an exceptional leader and acknowledged her as a vital member of the team. He said he was confident she could lead the team in all formats. On February 20, the New Zealand teams for the forthcoming series against Zimbabwe will be revealed. On February 25, the three-match T20I series is set to start in Hamilton.
