Former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra has come out all guns blazing to criticize the Indian team for their poor fielding efforts in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 campaign ahead of the grand finale on Sunday, September 28, in Dubai.
Speaking to ANI, Mishra stated that the Indian players shouldn’t give excuses and instead work hard while practicing such catches. He also questioned what exactly the Indian fielding coach is doing when such errors are constantly happening.
Notably, India dropped as many as 12 catches in the group stage and Super Four round in the ongoing showpiece event. While Suryakumar Yadav felt that it was part and parcel of the game, Varun Chakravarthy stated that the stadium lighting was distracting.
“You can’t give excuses at this level. We should be taking these catches, but definitely, if you ask me about rings of fire, it comes in the eye, something. It is a little bit of disturbance," Chakaravarthy stated.
However, Mishra was unimpressed with such explanations from professional cricketers. Though he can agree to one or two dropped catches can happen in a match, but it’s disappointing to see catches being dropped consistently.
“You should practice. What is the fielding coach doing? He should make them practice taking catches under the light. You are professional cricketers. You have to work hard and adjust to it. I agree that one or two dropped catches can happen in a match. But it has been happening consistently. I think Gautam Gambhir needs to focus on fielding," Mishra told ANI.
“In T20Is, dropping one catch can prove costly, and the Indian team is dropping three to four catches. They need to focus on fielding. There should be no margin of error in the final against Pakistan. Even if there is a problem, you should find a solution to it," he added.
