The Asia Cup 2025 is set to take place from September 9 to 28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament will be played in the T20 format, with India and Pakistan placed in Group A along with Oman and UAE.
However, there are several big and impactful names who might not be picked for Team India in this upcoming tournament.
Here are the 5 Indian players who might not be picked in the squad for the Asia Cup 2025
Shubman Gill
Gill had a fantastic England tour with the bat, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40 in 10 innings. His tally included four centuries. He also led the team from the front as the five-match series ended 2-2.
However, he is unlikely to find a place in India’s current T20I setup. Gill’s last T20I was on 30 July 2024 against Sri Lanka at Pallekele. So far, he has played 21 T20Is, scoring 578 runs at a strike rate of 139.27. His record includes three fifties and one century.
Meanwhile, Gill has been named captain of the North Zone for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. This makes his chances of featuring in the Asia Cup even slimmer, especially with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson expected to open the innings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Jaiswal is another batter who impressed in the recent Test series against England, scoring two centuries and two fifties. He made 411 runs in 10 innings at an average of 41.10. However, he is also likely to miss out on a place in the upcoming Asia Cup squad. His last T20I was the same match as Gill’s — against Sri Lanka at Pallekele on 30 July 2024.
In his T20I career so far, Jaiswal has played 23 matches, scoring 723 runs at a strike rate of 164.31. His record includes five fifties and one century. He will also feature in the upcoming Duleep Trophy for the West Zone, which makes his Asia Cup chances highly unlikely.
KL Rahul
Rahul was also one of the standout batters in the recent Test series against England, scoring 532 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.20. His tally included two centuries and two fifties.
He is the kind of batter who can be a solid option both in the top order or the middle order. However, considering the current options in India’s T20I setup, Rahul’s chances of making the Asia Cup squad look uncertain.
Rahul has played 72 T20Is, scoring 2,265 runs at a strike rate of 139.12. His record includes two centuries and 22 fifties. His last T20I was on 10 November 2022 — the semi-final of the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup against England in Adelaide, Australia. Unfortunately, India lost that match and were knocked out of the tournament.
Rishabh Pant
Pant suffered a foot injury (suspected metatarsal fracture) during the fourth Test against England in Manchester, which ruled him out of the fifth and final Test. He was hit by a yorker from Chris Woakes while batting.
Pant is now sidelined for six weeks, which means he will miss the upcoming Asia Cup. His last T20I was on 28 July 2024 against Sri Lanka at Pallekele.
So far, his T20I career has not been very impactful. In 76 matches, he has scored 1,209 runs at a strike rate of 127.26, with only three fifties.
Jasprit Bumrah
Bumrah played only three Tests in England, taking 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. Due to workload management, it was decided before the series that he would feature in only three matches. As a result, despite the last game being a must-win for India, Bumrah was rested.
Recently, reports have suggested that the ace pacer is also dealing with a knee injury. Considering these factors, he is most likely to miss the Asia Cup.
Bumrah’s last T20I was the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final on 29 June, where India defeated South Africa to lift the trophy. So far, he has taken 89 wickets in 70 T20Is at an economy rate of 6.27.
