AUS vs SA 2025: Injury Rules Kagiso Rabada Out of ODI Series; CSA Names Replacement

Despite being left out for the series opener, 19-year-old left-arm fast Kwena Maphaka, who took a leading nine wickets in the T20 series, has been added to the squad.

Due to ankle irritation, South Africa's pace leader Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of Tuesday's three-match, one-day international series against Australia. Rabada participated in all three Twenty20 matches of the previous series between the teams, but on Monday, he underwent a scan due to discomfort. Rabada was pulled by South Africa just an hour before the ODI series started in Cairns. 

He will continue his recuperation while on the Australia tour. Despite being left out for the series opener, 19-year-old left-arm fast Kwena Maphaka, who took a leading nine wickets in the T20 series, has been added to the squad. Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen, making his ODI debut, spearheads a South African assault led by seasoned quick Lungi Ngidi.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, Cricket South Africa (CSA) acknowledged the same and added that the bowler will now undergo rehabilitation exercises under the close supervision of medical professionals. The Temba Bavuma-led team has added youthful left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka to their roster as a replacement for his injury.

An official statement by CSA said, "Proteas Men’s fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia due to inflammation of his right ankle. The 30-year-old underwent a scan on Monday, which confirmed the extent of the injury. He will remain in Australia and undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the Proteas medical staff. Kwena Maphaka, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in the recent T20 International series, has been added to the squad."
