On Monday, October 27, Cricket Australia confirmed that the legspinner Tanveer Sangha will be replacing the star spinner Adam Zampa, who will miss the start of the T20I series against India, starting on Wednesday, October 29, at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
For the unversed, Zampa is set to welcome his second child with his wife, Harriet. While he missed the first ODI due to personal reasons, he made a comeback in the second ODI in Adelaide, winning the player of the match with a four-wicket haul. However, he couldn’t bag a wicket in the Sydney ODI, conceding 50 runs in 10 overs.
It’s important to note that Zampa is the star bowler for the Australian team, leading the wickets column with 131 wickets in 106 matches at an average of 21.38. Meanwhile, Sangha has played only seven T20Is, taking a four-wicket haul against South Africa in 2023.
Speaking about his stats in the T20I format, Sangha has scalped 10 wickets from seven innings at an average of 24.9, with the best bowling figures of 4/31 and an economy of 8.89, and a strike rate of 16.8.
While he made his T20I debut against South Africa in August 2023, his last T20I came against India at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in December 2023. Sangha scalped seven wickets in the India A series away from home for Australia A, and is currently playing in the One Day Cup with 10 scalps in four matches for New South Wales.
Most importantly, Sangha might form a spin attack with another spinner, Matthew Kuhnemann, in the T20I series. It’s worth noting that Australia is rotating their bowlers, with Josh Hazlewood featuring in the first two games, Sean Abbott featuring for just two games.
