England No.3 batter Ollie Pope went on to smack an unbeaten 100 against India in the ongoing Headingley, Leeds Test, which caught the attention of the opening batter Ben Duckett as he hailed him for being calm during the whole course of his innings.
Interestingly, both Duckett and Pope stitched a 122-run stand for the opening wicket, with both batters getting lives against Bumrah during the course of their innings. At stumps on Day 2, England scored 209/3 in 49 overs with Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) at the crease.
"I just think he was so calm coming out. He probably couldn't walk out in tougher conditions-with Jasprit (Bumrah) running down the hill with the lights on. I think at one point he was around 50 or run a ball 50, so it was a great partnership with him. I always have a good time out there in the middle with him, and I got goosebumps when he got to 100. You could see what it meant to him. He's such a big part of the dressing room, and it was just great to see him be there at 100 not out," Duckett said after the second day’s play.
Moving into the details of the first two days' play, India batted first after losing the toss. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star batter, scoring 101 runs in 159 balls with 16 fours and a six. Later, captain Shubman Gill smacked 147 runs in 227 balls with 19 fours and a six.
Subsequently, vice-captain Rishabh Pant also had an exceptional day, scoring 134 runs in 178 balls with 12 fours and six sixes. Eventually, India got bundled out for 471 runs in 113 overs. Josh Tongue and Ben Stokes scalped four wickets apiece.
In response, England could score 209/3 in 49 overs at the end of Day 2. Jasprit Bumrah was the wrecker-in-chief with a three-wicket haul.
