Brendon McCullum has vehemently opposed any examination of England's handling of the Harry Brook nightclub incident, claiming the issue was correctly resolved behind closed doors and that further public discussion is pointless. Defending his team's focus ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 build-up, England head coach Brendon McCullum has responded to the excessive media attention over skipper Harry Brook's off-field nightclub incident, calling the constant scrutiny "quite annoying."
The confrontation between England's T20 captain and a bouncer during England's tour of New Zealand last year is the root of the problem with Brook and several other English players. After admitting to the incident, the right-hander was later fined by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). McCullum said that the series of events created headlines and too frequently eclipsed the actual game of cricket.

The incident in question happened when England was in Wellington, and a nightclub bouncer punched Harry Brook. Josh Tongue and Jacob Bethell were found to have been present as well, and the ECB penalised them for their role. McCullum stated that those concerned were quite ashamed and acknowledged that he learned about the event during the ODI played the next day.
ESPN quotes McCullum saying, "I don't think we need to release all of those findings every time something arises to the media. Others will have their own opinions…The process was done internally at the ECB, which we were all a part of. The boys were under no uncertain terms about how we felt about it, but now our job is to support them. And, to be honest, I find it quite annoying that we keep going on and on about it, because these are young men who are under immense pressure and they've put their hand up for something they've been disciplined for, and piling onto them is not helpful for anyone"
