The first match of India's two-match Test series against the West Indies is scheduled to start on Thursday, October 2, at Ahmedabad's massive Narendra Modi Stadium. Shubman Gill will be leading at home for the first time in this series. Rishabh Pant's injury has made room for wicketkeepers Dhruv Jurel and N Jagadeesan, while veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed vice-captain. Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah will lead India's speed attack.
Due to injuries to pacers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, the West Indies have had two setbacks. Their speed unit will be led by Jayden Seales, with spinner Jomel Warrican and newcomer Khary Pierre expected to play significant roles. Following a 3-0 thumping in Australia, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze's comeback is expected to provide their batting lineup more depth.

The surface at Narendra Modi Stadium will be red soil with a green covering. A healthy layer of grass has been preserved by the curator and will be trimmed to 4-5 mm before the toss. Fast bowlers will benefit from this surface's early seam movement and added bounce. Over time, though, it can deteriorate and require spinners.
