According to head coach Shukri Conrad, South Africa wants its players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to return home by May 26. The IPL 2025 final was originally set for May 25, but due to the league's suspension due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, it has now been moved to June 3.
Eight of the 20 South African players participating in the IPL in India have been selected for the Proteas team for the forthcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia, which will begin on June 11 at Lord's.
“The initial agreement with the IPL and the BCCI was with the final being on the (May) 25th, our players would return on the 26th so that it allows them ample time before we fly out on the 30th. Nothing has changed from our perspective,” Conrad told the media on Tuesday.
The Proteas squad for the WTC Final, which will begin on June 11 in London, includes eight South African players: Kagiso Rabada (Gujarat Titans), Lungi Ngidi (Royal Chalengers Bengaluru), Tristan Stubbs (Delhi Capitals), Aiden Markram (Lucknow Super Giants), Ryan Rickelton (Mumbai Indians), Corbin Bosch (MI), Marco Jansen (Punjab Kings), and Wiaan Mulder (Sunrisers Hyderabad).
GT, RCB, MI, PBKS, DC, and LSG are currently vying for a position in the IPL playoffs. But some IPL teams may still benefit from South African players who aren't playing in the World Test Championship final against Australia. The stars of Proteas are:
Gerald Coetzee (Gujarat Titans), Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje (Kolkata Knight Riders), David Miller, Matthew Breetzke (Lucknow Super Giants), Nandre Burger, Kwena Maphaka, Lhuan-dre Pretorius (Rajasthan Royals), Heinrich Klaasen (SunRisers Hyderabad), and Dewald Brevis (a replacement player for the Chennai Super Kings), Faf du Plessis and Donovan Ferreira (Delhi Capitals).
Before travelling to London for the WTC final, the selected players will meet in Arundel, England, on May 31. They will play a warm-up match against Zimbabwe from June 3–6.
