CSK captains in IPL over the years from 2008 to 2025 (Updated List)

Arguably, one of the most sorted franchises in the history of not only Indian Premier League (IPL) but also T20 cricket, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been led by only four players in history so far. MS Dhoni is their captain forever and his legacy will be there forever until the franchise exists.

He was simply phenomenal as captain for the franchise in a staggering 235 matches. CSK won 142 matches and lost 90 under his tutelage boasting a win percentage of 60.42. The men in yellow also won the IPL a staggering five times in history in his captaincy and is the joint-most successful team as well alongside Mumbai Indians.

Whenever Dhoni missed a game from 2010 to 2019, Suresh Raina, fondly known as chinna thala, led CSK. Overall, he was the captain of the legendary franchise in only six matches winning two and losing three while the other match ended in a tie. 

When MS Dhoni was the captain, the franchise and the man himself tried handing over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja in the 2022 edition of IPL. But the plan went horribly wrong for them as under Jadeja’s leadership, CSK won only two out of eight matches while losing six.

Dhoni had to take back captaincy from him in the middle of the season even as CSK got knocked out of the IPL in the league stage. Dhoni then led the team to the title in IPL 2023 but stepped down ahead of the 2024 season identifying Ruturaj Gaikwad as their next captain.

This time around, the transition was smooth with Dhoni helping Gaikwad during the matches. Even though CSK couldn’t make it to the playoffs, Gaikwad looked assured in his captaincy winning seven and losing as many in 14 outings. 

He is set to lead the team in IPL 2025 as well and will be keen on winning the trophy for the sixth time in history. Having said that, Dhoni’s legacy in CSK as captain will remain forever.
