Dinesh Karthik reveals Axar Patel and not KL Rahul is Delhi Capitals’ new captain

ormer Indian wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik nonchalantly let the cat out of the bag when he claimed that Axar Patel is set to become Delhi Capitals captain for the IPL 2025 season. The Lucknow SuperGiants let go of KL Rahul and Capitals swooped in to bag the services of the star batter for INR 14 crore. It seemed like the writing was on the wall for KL Rahul to become the new DC skipper after the Capitals let go of Rishabh Pant. 

However, the Delhi Capitals management seems to have faith on Axar Patel's leadership abilities as the left-arm spinner was also the Capitals' top retention ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. The all-rounder also leads Gujarat in domestic cricket and has been named as the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav in the T20I series against England. 

Dinesh Karthik expressed his surprise on Hardik Pandya being removed as the vice-captain of the Indian T20I team for the three-match series against England. 

“I really don’t know. I don’t know why he (Hardik Pandya) was stripped of his vice-captaincy. I don’t see any reason to. They have done well. They have won in the bilaterals that he was the vice-captain. Not a clue,” Dinesh Karthik said on HeyCB.

Dinesh Karthik was happy for Axar Patel as the latter was being looked at in a leadership role by the Indian team as well as the Delhi Capitals. He wished the all-rounder all the best for his potential new role as DC captain.

“But for Axar Patel, all the very best. A good opportunity for him. Third, he is going to be the Delhi Capitals’ captain as well. So here is a good opportunity for him to lead and show the way. He has been doing that for Gujarat as well. So, wish him all the luck,“ he added.
