After India bagged a four-wicket win in the first ODI over England, Shubman Gill, India's vice-captain, has opened up on captain Rohit Sharma’s words on the field. Gill has stated that Rohit says not to hesitate while giving inputs being on the field.
Speaking to the broadcasters after the match against England, Gill stated that nothing much has changed since he became the ODI vice-captain. He also hailed Shreyas Iyer’s approach, which helped Team India to defeat the opposition.
“In batting not much has changed, but on the field I want to know what the thinking is and what Rohit bhai thinks and give my inputs. He tells me if you want to tell me anything in the match, do not hesitate,” Gill told the broadcaster.
After India suffered 19/2 in 5.2 overs, Shubman Gill stood tall alongside Shreyas Iyer. While Gill scored 87 runs in 96 balls with 14 fours, Iyer smacked 59 off 36 balls with nine fours and two sixes.
"[Thoughts at 19 for 2] Trying to be positive. There was a little in it for fast bowlers. Idea was to not to go too much on the back foot, play good cricketing shots. When a player [Iyer] comes like that, the opposition also goes on the back foot. Good decision on his part, also helped me," Gill said.
When asked about his favorite shot of the match, he said that while he played a lot of wonderful shots, the pull shot through mid-wicket was his favorite.
"The pull I hit through midwicket when I was batting on 70. [Sticky wicket?] I thought it was a bit double-paced. Spinners varied their pace well, when they bowled slow, it was turning. Had it in mind to look to the square of the wicket and not try to hit down the ground," he added.
