In the awesome five-test Test series between England and India over the summer of 2025, the batters on both teams produced a feast of runs to help create one of the most bitterly contested series in recent history.
In seven weeks and five thrilling clashes, there were over 7,000 runs scored, in which a record-equalling 21 individual centuries were made and atop that run-scoring pile were five players whose big scores and consistency underpinned the performances of their teams. These batters controlled the run charts through a sequence characterized by its high-scoring matches and dramatic shifts in momentum.
The series provided testament to the best of Test cricket, reminding everyone why the longer version of the game continues to be enchanting. Below are the top five run-makers of the series.
1. Shubman Gill (India) – 754 runs
India's skipper set the tone from the front with a jaw-dropping exhibition of batting brilliance, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40. Gill's 754 runs featured four colossal centuries, a top score of 269 that's one of the series' standout individual performances.
His capacity to up the gears when required and anchor the innings firmly in pressure situations was the key to India's two wins and to reducing England's lead during the drawn series. He has been on song in this series.
2. Joe Root (England) – 537 runs
England's pillar in the top order, Root proved again why he is one of the modern greats. Scoring three centuries and a fifty, he scored 537 runs at an average well over 67. His cover drives and leg-glances were a treat to watch at Lord's and Headingley, even as injuries affected support around him.
Root's innings formed bases for the two England victories and made his side a contender in the other three Tests. He broke several records in this series as well.
3. KL Rahul (India) – 532 runs
Opening the batting for India and the only opener in this list, Rahul was third-highest scorer, amassing 532 runs in ten innings. He chipped in with two centuries and an equal number of fifties and a best of 137.
Rahul's combination of textbook defence and creative stroke-play both against pace and spin enabled India to come back in tricky conditions. He was usually considered by the pundits to be technically the most solid batter among the bunch.
4. Ravindra Jadeja (India) – 516 runs
Brought in as a No. 6, Jadeja had a purple-patch in which he scored 516 runs, becoming the first Indian batter at the No. 6 slot to surpass 500 in an England Test series. He scored a single century (107* at Manchester) and five half-centuries, performing sterling work in stabilizing India's lower order and adding panache at pivotal moments. His series average of 86.00 highlights just how essential those runs proved in keeping India in the contest.
5. Harry Brook (England) – 481 runs
England's new star was the top run-scorer for his team behind Root, scoring 481 runs from nine innings. Brook turned opening gambits into substantial scores with two centuries (including a counter-attacking 111 in the last Test at The Oval) and two half-centuries, sometimes giving the boost when England needed it most. His aggressive style is quintessential to the "Bazball" ethos and contributed to the tie at 2–2 with a nail-biting finish.
