Former Indian opener and commentator Abhinav Mukund has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to reconsider appointing Shubman Gill as an all-format captain.
Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, Mukund stated that Gill has it in him to become an all-format captain. However, he added that India doesn’t need an all-format captain at the moment, stating that split captaincy would be a smart move.
Notably, Gill was appointed as the new Test captain ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England after the veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bid adieu to the longest format of the game. Gill went on to propel India to a 2-2 series draw in the five-match series.
“I think Shubman has it in him to become an all-format captain, but I don't think India should have an all-format captain anymore. Split captaincy is a smart move. Shubman Gill has been given the responsibility to take on the mantle in Tests and he will be under big pressure, Mukund said while speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan.
Later, Gill was tasked as the vice-captain of the Indian T20I team ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 campaign, which India successfully defended after defeating Pakistan in the grand finale. Eventually, he was elevated as the captain in ODI cricket, replacing the actual skipper Rohit Sharma.
“This is a crucial series and the England series was a big confidence booster for India. At home, everyone expects India to win - no questions asked,” he went on to add.
However, it seems to be a huge workload on the Indian captain, Shubman Gill, as he suffered a neck spasm after playing non-stop cricket since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. It would be interesting to see if the BCCI reconsiders the decision.
