Former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath has heaped praise on the Indian middle-order batter KL Rahul for batting at different positions across his international career and has adapted to it over the years for the Men In Blue.
Speaking on the Fast Bowling Cartel YouTube channel, McGrath has asserted that Rahul is one of the versatile players he has seen. However, he added that it can hamper the batter’s confidence if he is moved up and down in the order.
“They’ve sort of moved him around. I think he’s nearly batted at all 11 positions at some stage,” McGrath said on the Fast Bowling Cartel YouTube channel.
“It must be tough for him to adapt. But he’s one of those versatile players. He top-scored for India in fairly tough conditions. So, from opening down to I am not sure how low he has batted. Sometimes that can mess with your confidence, but I think for him, maybe he’s just used to it and adapts. He keeps as well, so he’s a very versatile player,” he added.
Interestingly, in the first ODI against Australia in Perth, Rahul, who is actually slotted at No.5 in the playing XI, came down at No.6 in the batting order with Axar Patel taking up the No.5 batting position.
For the unversed, Rahul is having one of the top years in his Test career, amassing 745 runs in eight matches with three centuries and as many half-centuries at an average of 53.21. He also scored two centuries in the five-Test series in England, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Rahul’s middle-order contributions were important in India’s successful run in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Speaking about his numbers, he has scored 230 runs at an average of 46 in eight ODIs in the ongoing calendar year.
