Harry Brook replaces Joe Root to emerge as No.1 Test batter in ICC Rankings

England middle-order batter Harry Brook has replaced his colleague Joe Root as the No. 1-ranked batter in the ICC Test rankings, released on Wednesday, July 9. Notably, Brook smacked 158 in the first innings of the Birmingham Test to have an 18-point lead over Root in the newly released rankings.

On the other hand, the Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has rocketed to the career-best sixth rank after climbing 15 spots up. Notably, Gill smacked 269 and 161 in both innings of the Birmingham Test to see the surge in rankings with 807 rating points.

Besides Brook and Root, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Australia’s No.4 batter Steve Smith are occupying the third, fourth, and fifth ranks in the newly released Test rankings for batters.

Moving further, England keeper-batter Jamie Smith also moved 16 spots up to the 10th rank, thanks to his career-best knock of an unbeaten 184 in the first innings of the second Test and 88 runs in the second innings against India.

Additionally, South African stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder also improved his rankings in both batting and all-rounders categories. Interestingly, he smacked an unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in the second Test, which saw him jump 34 spots to No. 22 in batters and 12 spots up to the third rank in the all-rounders category, which is still led by Ravindra Jadeja.

Moving our focus to the ODI batting rankings, Sri Lankan batters Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis made impressive gains. Interestingly, Mendis moved 10 spots up to make it to the 10th rank while Asalanka surged two spots to the sixth spot.

While Asalanka smacked 106 and 58 in the ODI series against Bangladesh, Mendis knocks include 124 and 56 in the same series, which saw him winning the player of the series award.
