England batting sensation Harry Brook has pulled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, citing the need to prepare for the busiest period of his international career. Brook, who was bought by Delhi Capitals for ₹6.25 crore in the mega auction, announced his decision on Sunday, March 9. This marks the second consecutive year he has withdrawn from the tournament, having skipped IPL 2024 due to personal reasons.
Brook’s withdrawal may lead to a two-year ban from the IPL if organizers enforce existing rules. According to IPL regulations, any player who opts out after being picked in the auction is at risk of being banned from both the tournament and future auctions for two seasons.
Brook, seen as a frontrunner to replace Jos Buttler as England’s white-ball captain, had struggled in his previous IPL stint with SunRisers Hyderabad in 2023, scoring only 190 runs in 11 matches despite being purchased for ₹13.25 crore.
Brook issues apology to Delhi Capitals and fans
In a heartfelt statement on Instagram, Brook apologized to Delhi Capitals and their supporters for his last-minute decision.
“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologize unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters,” Brook said.
He emphasized his commitment to England cricket and the importance of taking time off to recharge after a demanding season.
“With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision. It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.”
Brook featured in the Champions Trophy but managed only 47 runs in three matches as England endured a disastrous campaign, losing all their Group A games. Following England’s exit from the semi-final race, Jos Buttler stepped down as ODI captain, increasing speculation that Brook may take over as England’s next white-ball leader.
With IPL 2025 set to begin on March 22, Brook’s withdrawal has stirred debate, but his focus remains firmly on international cricket.
