“He doesn’t throw many variations in the nets” - Rohit Sharma reveals India’s additional weapon in Champions Trophy

Indian captain Rohit Sharma feels that mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy gives the Indian bowling unit an additional weapon in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, Varun came into the squad as a replacement for Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Rohit has asserted that Varun doesn’t show a lot of variations in the nets. However, he brings out his best efforts when he is out on the field. India will start off its campaign against Bangladesh on Thursday, February 20.

“He doesn’t throw many variations in the nets. He throws the ball in the same way. Maybe he doesn’t even want to show us what he has (laughs). But that is a good thing. He has got a certain weapon that he wants to put out there when it actually matters," Rohit said in the pre-match press conference.

“I am more than happy if he wants to do that. But he has got something different which is why he is here with us. Whatever we have seen of him in the last 8-9 months, it has been very impressive," he added.

Importantly, Varun ended the T20I series against England as the leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps from five innings. Later, he was selected for the ODI series. Despite having less experience in ODIs, Rohit has backed the spinner’s inclusion.

India will start their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against Bangladesh. Later, they will take on Pakistan and then New Zealand. India will play all their games of the showpiece event in Dubai.
