Here’s why Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t received his salary for four months from the Bangladesh Cricket Board

Bangladesh cricket’s biggest name, Shakib Al Hasan, has been facing significant financial difficulties as he has not received his salary for the last four months from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). According to reports, Shakib is entitled to approximately BDT 48 lakhs (USD 38,400), excluding taxes, for this period. However, due to legal complications and financial restrictions, his payments have been delayed indefinitely. This unexpected situation has not only affected Shakib financially but also raised questions about the process of salary disbursement for contracted players in the Bangladesh cricket system.

Shakib’s legal complications and frozen bank accounts

Shakib is currently entangled in serious legal issues in Bangladesh, with reports linking him to murder allegations related to political unrest in the country. These allegations have created significant turmoil for the cricketer, both personally and professionally. On November 6, 2024, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) froze his bank accounts, which has directly impacted his ability to receive payments from the BCB. Since then, Shakib has been unable to access his finances, and as a result, he has not been paid his salary for September, October, November, and December 2024.

The freezing of his bank accounts has made it impossible for the BCB to process his salary payments as per the usual contract terms. This situation has left Shakib in financial limbo, as he cannot receive funds or access his existing accounts until the legal matters are resolved. The ongoing legal battle has further complicated his cricketing career, as uncertainties about his future continue to grow. His situation serves as a reminder of how legal troubles can disrupt even the most accomplished athletes' careers, regardless of their achievements on the field.

Shakib’s contractual entitlement to BDT 48 lakhs remains undisputed, but the frozen bank accounts have created a complex challenge in processing the payment. While the BCB has assured that they are committed to honoring their contractual obligations, the legal restrictions prevent them from transferring the money to Shakib at this moment. BCB’s cricket operations chairman, Nazmul Abedin, reassured that the board intends to ensure that Shakib receives what he is owed once the legal hurdles are cleared.

"He [Shakib] will get his salary as per the agreement because whether you play or not, there is an agreement in place, and certainly, we will try to fulfill our commitment as per the agreement," Abedin told Cricbuzz. This statement reflects BCB’s stance that the delay in salary payment is not due to any reluctance on their part but is a direct consequence of the external financial restrictions imposed on the cricketer.

While Shakib's legal troubles continue, BCB remains in a difficult position. The board does not want to violate any financial regulations, yet it also does not want to be seen as abandoning one of its most important players. The entire situation remains in a state of uncertainty, and until Shakib's legal matters are resolved, his salary payment will likely remain on hold.

Beyond cricket and legal troubles, Shakib Al Hasan is also a devoted family man. Despite his current struggles, he has always prioritized his family life. He married Umme Ahmed Shishir on December 12, 2012, after meeting her in England while playing county cricket in 2010. Umme, a Bangladeshi-American, holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota and has been a strong pillar of support for Shakib throughout his career.

The couple has three children: daughters Alayna Aubrey Hasan (born November 8, 2015) and Errum Hasan (born April 24, 2020) and a son, Eyzah Al Hasan (born March 16, 2021). While Shakib faces legal challenges and financial setbacks, his family remains by his side, helping him navigate these difficult times.
