England skipper Harry Brook has admitted that his team’s fielding lapses, including him dropping Sanju Samson’s catch in the third over of the first innings, turned out to be costly as England suffered a seven-run defeat to India to bow out of the campaign.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Brook clarified that England failed to read the Wankhede conditions properly as India put up a daunting total of 253 runs in 20 overs despite losing the toss.
For the unversed, Samson was dropped in the third over off Jofra Archer's bowling, and he eventually went on to score a valuable 89-run knock, which turned out to be crucial for Team India in the first innings.
"We thought there might have been hold, spin in the first innings, slid onto the bat nicely, and India batted well. I'll hold my hands up and admit I made a big mistake dropping Samson. We weren't good enough in the field. We misexecuted, and can't afford to do that against India," Brook stated at the post-match presentation ceremony.
In the second innings, Jacob Bethell emerged as a star player with an exceptional century, putting England in the chase for the majority of the second innings. Brook lauded the young English all-rounder for his fearless approach in the humongous 254-run chase.
"Bethell was absolutely unbelievable, he'll earn some serious money. To see him taking it from ball one showed the world what he can do. We had a good tournament; we should be extremely proud of how we played. We stuck to it the whole game; unfortunately, we were on the wrong side," he concluded.
India will next lock horns with New Zealand in the grand finale of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.
