I wasn’t sure if I would ever play Tests again: Senuran Muthusamy

After scoring his maiden Test century vs. India, Senuran Muthusamy revealed his self-doubt after his poor 2019 debut: "I wasn't sure if I'd ever play Test cricket again." He spoke about his four-year fight in domestic cricket to return and conquer the subcontinent.

After his heroics with the willow on Day 2 of the ongoing Guwahati Test, the South African bowling all-rounder, Senuran Muthusamy, has disclosed that he thought that his Test career was almost over after he could pick only two wickets in two Tests on the India tour in 2019.

Interestingly, the India tour in 2019 was Muthusamy’s debut Test series. However, six years later, the spin-bowling all-rounder emerged as a star for South Africa in two consecutive tours in Asia.

While he secured 11 wickets in the first Test in Pakistan in October 2025, he went on to score an unbeaten 89 in the second Test, stamping his authority in this particular format. In the ongoing Test, he went on to score a 109-run knock after coming out to bat at 201/5.

“My journey's been unique. Got a taste of international cricket in 2019 in India, debuted here, went back into the wilderness a little bit. Like you say, cricket is such a journey that you just try to take it one day at a time. You try not to think too far ahead,” Muthusamy said after the second day’s play.

“But there were times, especially after 2019, when I wasn't sure if I’d ever play Test cricket again and certainly not in India after we lost that series. So just really grateful for the support that I've got back home, for the people that are really close with me, the coaches, the support staff here, the players, my family back home, my friends. They've been incredible,” he added.

It’s worth noting that Senuran Muthusamy’s ancestors hail from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. However, the spin bowling all-rounder has revealed that he never visited his native town in South India.

“Of course, I'm of Indian heritage, but that was quite a few generations ago. So my roots are in the south, in Tamil Nadu, my mum and my aunt have been to visit our extended family on that end of India, I haven't been there as yet,” the all-rounder concluded.
