South Africa have already qualified for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC). But before that, they have unfinished business in the white-ball format. The Temba Bavuma-led side will be looking to go all the way in the ICC Champions Trophy making amends for a semifinal finish at the ODI World Cup in India in 2023.
Their squad consists of seven batters including two wicket-keepers, four all-rounders and as many bowlers. From the original squad announced, the Proteas are set to miss Gerald Coetze and Anrich Nortje due to injuries and they have already announced replacements for them.
Apart from Bavuma, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen will play a key role for the Proteas in the batting department. Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen’s all-round abilities will be crucial for South Africa while it remains to be seen if both Corbin Bosch and Wiaan Mulder will get a go in the same playing XI.
Interestingly, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi are only two specialist quicks for them even as Jansen will take the new ball. Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj are the two spinners named in the squad and looking at the conditions, only one of them is likely to play.
South Africa have been drawn in the tough group alongside world champions Australia, Afghanistan and England in group B. They will start their campaign against Afghanistan on February 21 at the National Stadium in Karachi. South Africa will then travel to Rawalpindi to face Australia on February 25 before coming back to Karachi to lock horns against England on March 1.
South Africa, across all levels in the ICC events, have made it to the finals only to finish as runners up recently. Their women’s team has made it to the final of T20 and ODI World Cup in the last couple of years. The men’s team lost to India in the final of T20 World Cup while the U19 Women’s team lost in the final, again to India recently in the World Cup.
