On the first day of the current second Test match against South Africa, Zimbabwean bowler Kundai Matigimu was given a demerit point and fined 15% of his match fee for throwing the ball in an "inappropriate and dangerous" way. Matigimu fielded a ball in his follow-through and flung it at hitter Lhuan-de Pretorius, striking him in the wrist at close range during the 72nd over of South Africa's opening innings.

In the seventieth over, Matigumu fielded the ball off his bowling and flung it forcefully towards the stumps at Lhuan-de Pretorius' end. But the left-handed batter was hit by the misdirected throw, and the force injured his wrist. Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel was determined to have been violated by Matigimu. The clause is related to "throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match."

There was no formal hearing, and the pacer acknowledged the offence and agreed to the punishment suggested by match referee Ranjan Madugalle. This was the first offence the Zimbabwean had committed in 24 months. To the right-arm pacer's disciplinary record was added one demerit point. His first offence in a 24-month (two-year) span was this one. Matigimu made his debut for Zimbabwe on the international scene in the second Test of the two-match series.

The Proteas, and especially backup captain Wiaan Mulder, were the ones who dominated the play on the first day. Mulder contributed 264 of the 465 runs South Africa scored in 88 overs at the end of the first day. The following day, the all-rounder carried on with his marathon, declaring at lunchtime that he had achieved a record-breaking 367 off 334 deliveries.
