Virat Kohli, a former captain and top batsman for India, announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, May 12, capping an incredible 14-year career. While many were taken aback by his decision, it was made just six days after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket.
If India loses badly in the forthcoming five-Test series in England and the team management and selectors ask him to return, former Australia captain Michael Clarke thinks Virat Kohli, who views Test cricket as the ultimate form of cricket, might come out of retirement.
According to the Indian Express, Michael Clarke stated the following when appearing on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast:
“I believe this. If India go to England and get flogged, if they lose the series 5-0 for example, I think the fans will want Virat Kohli to come out of retirement and play Test cricket again. And I honestly, I think if he was asked by the captain, selectors and supported by fans, if they get beaten big time in England, I think he’ll come. He still loves Test cricket. I think his words, I think those words, like you could hear his passion for Test cricket is real.”
Nobody anticipated that Virat Kohli would leave the format he loves, so his retirement from tests was a huge shock. But he sent a passionate statement on social media, emphasising that although it wasn't an easy choice, he felt that his time had come.
There have been calls for him to return to retirement because of England's overwhelming home dominance. According to some parts of the rumours, Virat Kohli, who is regarded as the face of test cricket, would speak with ICC Chairman Jay Shah because the format needs his participation to survive.
