“You really have to take those chances” - India assistant coach disappointed with Nitish Reddy’s performance in 2nd ODI

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate criticized Nitish Reddy's 20(21) & 0-13 in Rajkot ODI loss: "When you do get him game time, he often ends up not doing a heck of a lot...you really have to take those chances" amid selection pressure for all-rounder role.

Team India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate wasn’t satisfied with the Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy’s performance after India’s seven-wicket defeat to New Zealand in the second ODI in Rajkot, as the series is currently levelled at 1-1.

In the second ODI, Nitish could score 21-ball 20 runs in the second ODI against New Zealand in Rajkot. Moreover, with the ball, he conceded 13 runs in his two-over spell, without picking up a wicket, which didn’t go down well with the Indian assistant coach, who got candid in the post-match press conference.

"For someone who's making their way, particularly with the bat tonight (Wednesday), it was that perfect chance where you're walking in that situation, and you've got a chance to spend 15 overs at the wicket. You really have to take those chances to push your case to be selected," Ryan said at the post-match press conference.

Furthermore, the assistant coach also revealed that India would have preferred playing a third spinner instead of Nitish Kumar Reddy after New Zealand's spinners exploited the conditions perfectly well.

"If you look at the combinations we have played in the past, we do like the extra spinner. To bring Ayush (Badoni) into the squad at the very last minute with Washy (Washington Sundar) going down in the (last) game, we thought Nitish should be better suited on this track," he said.

"Looking at the way the New Zealand spinners bowled, we could have done (it) with another spinner,” he concluded.

Delving into the details of the second ODI, India batted first after losing the toss. KL Rahul stood tall, scoring a century off 87 balls as India posted a dominating total of 284/7 in 50 overs on a good batting wicket.

In the chase, New Zealand finished the game with 15 balls to spare, thanks to Will Young's 87-run knock and Daryl Mitchell's unbeaten 131-run knock off 117 balls.
