India's 15-man squad named for South Africa ODI series; surprising names included

On Sunday, November 23, the Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, named India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, which is scheduled to start on Sunday, November 30.

While the ODI series commences in Ranchi, the action later moves to the second ODI in Raipur. The third and final ODI will be played in Visakhapatnam. KL Rahul, the keeper-batter, has been named as the stand-in captain in the absence of Gill, who has been ruled out of the series due to a neck injury.

Notably, KL Rahul last led Team India in 2023 when they stunned South Africa 2-1 in an ODI series. On the other hand, ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has also been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series due to his recent injury.

Delving into the details about inclusions for the South African ODI series, in-form batters Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, and Rishabh Pant have been named, while the senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also returns to the squad.

Speaking about the exclusions, all-rounder Axar Patel has been removed from the squad while Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested. 

India will come into this ODI series after suffering a 1-2 series defeat to Australia away from home. Indian opening batter Rohit Sharma was awarded the player of the series for his century and a half-century on that tour.
