Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to make the playoffs of the IPL 2024 season after losing to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league game of the season.
With some fine acquisitions in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Chennai would hope that they become the first team to win six IPL titles in 2025.
While Chennai have made some commendable signings, there remain some areas of concern for the Men in Yellow. On that note, let’s take a look at three such areas of concern:
1. Lack of quality backups in the batting
CSK did the bulk of their work in the batting department during their retentions by retaining the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, and MS Dhoni. However, as far as the backups to these batters are concerned, Chennai does not have the depth needed.
The likes of Deepak Hooda and Rahul Tripathi didn’t have the best of campaigns in IPL 2024 and did not inspire a lot of confidence when it came to making a mark in CSK’s middle order.
2. Lack of a proper finisher
Chennai Super Kings did pick up Sam Curran in the IPL 2025 auction, but it seems like they once again would be dependent on MS Dhoni to provide a strong finish to their innings.
While Dhoni has had a great impact in the minimal deliveries he has faced in the past season, he is already 43 and his lack of form could cause problems for the Super Kings.
3. Bowling attack lacks depth outside Chennai
CSK have quality spinners like Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Noor Ahmad for the turning tracks that they could prepare at the Chepauk.
However, for the away games, Chennai would need their quicks to step up and it is not necessary that their spinners could get as much help from the surface. The likes of Khaleel Ahmed are injury prone and Chennai will be in deep trouble if those injury woes resurface, especially away from home.
In conclusion, while the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made some commendable signings for IPL 2025, there are still areas of concern that need to be addressed. The lack of quality backups in the batting department, the dependence on MS Dhoni as a finisher, and the lack of depth in the bowling attack outside Chennai are key issues that could impact their performance. Addressing these concerns will be crucial for CSK as they aim to become the first team to win six IPL titles.
