IPL 2025: 3 Players who might retire from IPL

With the Indian Premier League 2025 season coming to an end, there might be a few players who will consider stepping away from the competition after the end of the league due to various reasons.

While the main goal of the IPL is to unearth talent and nurture them to make it to the highest level of the game, there are also a lot of experienced players who take part in the league and share their experience with the young talent.

Due to their increase in age, dip in form, and fitness issues, they consider bidding adieu to the league after the end of the season. On that note, let’s take a look at three players who might retire from the IPL after the end of the IPL 2025 season.

3 Players who might retire from IPL

1. Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis, who is part of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the IPL 2025 season, had an inconsistent season after being roped in at INR 2 crore at the mega auction. He was earlier part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings franchises.

After being part of the RCB franchise as a captain in the IPL 2024 season, he was released by the side ahead of the mega auction. Unfortunately, he couldn’t propel the Capitals to the playoffs in the IPL 2025 season.

Interestingly, in 2022 and 2024, Du Plessis propelled RCB to the playoffs, but the side couldn’t get their hands on the trophy. He was part of the CSK set-up earlier, winning titles in 2018 and 2021. With the South African crossing 40, he would be hoping to bid adieu to the league.

2. Moeen Ali

Kolkata Knight Riders overseas all-rounder Moeen Ali is another player who could announce his retirement from the league after his team failed to make it to the playoffs. The 37-year-old could score only five runs from two innings in IPL 2025.

He was part of the Chennai Super Kings set-up since IPL 2021, winning titles in the 2021 and 2023 editions. However, he was released by CSK ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Earlier, he represented RCB from 2018 to 2020.

In the IPL 2025 season, Ali managed to score only five runs with the willow and scalped six wickets from five innings, failing to live up to expectations. With such poor returns, we might not see the English all-rounder again in the league.

3. MS Dhoni

The Chennai Super Kings' stand-in captain, MS Dhoni, could finally end his IPL career after not taking his side to the playoffs in the IPL 2025 season. Unfortunately, for the first time, CSK settled for the wooden spoon in the league’s history.

With Ruturaj Gaikwad sustaining an elbow fracture, Dhoni was requested to replace him as the stand-in captain mid-way through the tournament. Though the franchise made some changes to their batting order, Dhoni couldn’t change the fortunes of the side.

With Dhoni reaching the age of 44 and his knees not properly supporting him between the wickets, he could consider retiring from the league despite showcasing exceptional reflexes behind the stumps.
