IPL 2025: 3 Teams with the worst fielding units

As cricket pundits often say, “Catches win matches.” Fielding is one of the most fundamental yet underappreciated aspects of the game. If fielders fail to support their bowlers, it can spell disaster for the team. Therefore, fielders must avoid dropping catches and misfielding opportunities that can shift the momentum.

This season, a few teams have consistently let their bowlers down with poor fielding performances. Dropped catches and lack of effort have cost these sides dearly. Let’s take a look at the three teams with the weakest fielding units in IPL 2025:

1. Lucknow Super Giants

Despite managing to win a few games, the Lucknow Super Giants have struggled in the field. Under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, LSG has not been at their best in this department.

In just five games, they have dropped seven catches and committed 22 instances of misfielding. These lapses have provided their opponents with extra opportunities, highlighting the need for urgent improvement in their fielding standards.

2. Punjab Kings

It’s surprising to see Punjab Kings on this list, especially with Ricky Ponting, one of the greatest fielders ever associated with the team. In four matches, PBKS has dropped nine catches despite having several athletic players in the squad.

They have also recorded 13 misfields, showing a lack of sharpness and focus. A glaring example was in the match against Chennai Super Kings, where PBKS fielders displayed poor effort across three consecutive deliveries in an over bowled by Marco Jansen.

3. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Unquestionably, CSK has been the weakest fielding unit this season. For a franchise that once featured legends like Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, and Suresh Raina, renowned for their fielding prowess, this is a significant fall from grace.

So far, they have dropped 11 catches and recorded 17 misfields. These errors have proven extremely costly. In all four of their losses, the eventual Player of the Match was dropped early in their innings. Rajat Patidar was dropped thrice on scores of 17, 19, and 20 before going on to score 51 at Chepauk. Nitish Rana’s top edge slipped through Khaleel Ahmed’s hands, after which he added 70 runs from just 28 balls. Similarly, Priyansh Arya was dropped on his second ball, an admittedly tough caught-and-bowled chance, and again when he was on 35.
