Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Ajinkya Rahane, ended their IPL 2025 season at the seventh rank with five wins and seven losses. The defending champions entered the campaign with a lot of hope. However, they failed to live up to the expectations, right from the first game.
While KKR purchased some exceptional players like Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock, and Venkatesh Iyer at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, they invested too much in a few players, which resulted in a poor auction strategy.
On that note, let’s take a look at the three worst signings by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
3 Worst signings by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025
1. Moeen Ali
English all-rounder Moeen Ali, who was part of the CSK franchise for the last four seasons, was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise at the price of INR 2 Crore at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
In the IPL 2025 season, Moeen Ali could play only six games, scoring just five runs and scalping six wickets. While he wasn’t a consistent starter for the team, he later pulled out of the competition when the season was suspended.
2. Spencer Johnson
Former Gujarat Titans pacer Spencer Johnson was roped in by the KKR franchise at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction for a whopping price of INR 2.8 Crore. He scalped a total of four wickets from five games for the Titans in 2024 before being released.
However, he failed to live up to expectations in IPL 2025 for KKR, picking up only one wicket after playing four games. Moreover, he had an economy of 11.73 at an average of 133. The Australian seamer came into the season with a lot of expectations, but faltered extremely.
3. Venkatesh Iyer
Top-order batter Venkatesh Iyer, who has been part of the KKR franchise since IPL 2021, was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. Interestingly, he was again roped in by the KKR side at a whopping price of INR 23.75 Crore, which hampered the team’s auction strategy completely.
While he was exceptional in IPL 2023 and IPL 2024, scoring 404 and 370 runs respectively, he faltered badly in 2025, scoring only 142 runs from seven innings at a mediocre average of 20.28 and a strike rate of 139.21 with only one fifty.
