After a huge gap of 10 years, Punjab Kings reached the finals of the Indian Premier League, and it was all a complete team effort that took them there. However, some players contributed much more than the rest and, as a result, stood out with their performances. Here are five such players who should be retained for the next season.
1. Shreyas Iyer
Given the nickname of “Sarpanch” this season, Shreyas Iyer had a monumental IPL season with the Punjab Kings. Bought in at a record price, he must have been under a lot of pressure to justify his price tag, but he was probably the only player to do so as well.
He was phenomenal in the season, with the bat as well as with his captaincy on the field. He revamped his game this season and smashed 604 runs at a strike rate of 175, while he was very attacking in nature with his captaincy as well, taking his team to the finals. He became the only captain to take three different teams to the finals.
2. Arshdeep Singh
The premier left-arm pacer of the Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh, was right on the money this season for the team. He has been improving his game with every passing year and has now become one of the deadliest bowlers not just in the league, but across the globe.
He picked up 21 wickets with an economy of 8.88 playing all 17 matches for his team this season. Even though he had hit a slump in the middle, he still managed to finish with 21 wickets and was one of the highest wicket-takers. This shows the pedigree he holds.
3. Shashank Singh
He had a brilliant last season where he impressed everyone with his finishes, and as a result, he was one of the only two players to be retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auctions. Now, he has had two back-to-back good seasons for the team and so he should continue to be retained.
Batting with an average of 50 and a strike rate of 153.50, he slammed three half-centuries in the season, which took his tally to a total of 350 runs this season. Even in the finals, he almost defied fate and was about to take his team to the trophy, but he missed it by just a single ball.
4. Priyansh Arya
Another uncapped player for the Punjab Kings, the 23-year-old Priyansh Arya, made his debut in the Indian Premier League this season. Although with the quality of the game he displayed, it never looked like he did not belong at this stage. Rather, he was putting the opposition under pressure whenever he was out on the crease.
With two fifties and a century, he had amassed 475 runs in his debut season from 17 matches. Although he had an average of 27.94, he had a stupendous strike rate of 179.24 opening the innings for Punjab. In just the fourth IPL game of his career, he had hit a brilliant ton against CSK.
5. Prabhsimran Singh
Many teams were in contention for having the most dangerous pair of openers, but what everyone else had not guessed was that the list would be topped by the pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. Recognising his talent, apart from Shashank, he was the only one to be retained ahead of the mega auctions.
He did show why the team showed so much trust in him as he scored 549 runs in the season with a strike rate of 160.52 from 17 matches. He was brought in as an impact player, and he made sure that he left an impact on the game with his contributions.
