IPL 2025: Delhi Capitals appoint Axar Patel as captain

The Delhi Capitals franchise has appointed Axar Patel as its captain for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Notably, Axar was retained by the franchise for a whopping INR 16.5 Crore ahead of the mega-auction in November 2024.

It’s worth noting that he was named India’s T20I vice-captain in January 2025 for the England series. Moreover, he led his stateside Gujarat in 23 matches across different formats. Interestingly, he captained the Capitals in one game last year, which they lost to RCB to miss their spot in the playoffs.

With Rishabh Pant leaving the Delhi franchise ahead of the auction, Axar emerged as the team’s most experienced player. For the unversed, he has played a total of 82 matches in six games. 

It’s important to note that Delhi Capitals are one of the franchises besides Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, to have never won the trophy. Notably, the Capitals finished at the sixth rank in the last season, winning seven games.

"I've grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward.

"Our coaches and scouts have done a superb job at the mega auction by putting together a balanced and robust squad which has tremendous potential. We have plenty of leaders in the group, which is also very helpful for me, and I can't wait to join the team as we look forward to a very successful season for the Capitals, backed by the immense love and support of our fans."
