IPL 2025: Dinesh Karthik reveals the actual reason why RCB picked Rajat Patidar as captain

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter and current RCB batting coach cum mentor Dinesh Karthik has revealed the actual reason behind the Bengaluru-based franchise going ahead with promising batter Rajat Patidar as its new captain.

Karthik had asserted that since it’s a fresh cycle for the franchise, the think-tank team thought of having a new leader to take charge. He added that the team management was impressed with Patidar’s leadership style for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket.

“The way Rajat led Madhya Pradesh during the domestic season was fantastic. A lot of players had great things to say about his leadership, and that played a huge role in our decision. Since this is a fresh cycle for the team, we wanted a new leader to take charge, and Rajat was the ideal choice,” Dinesh Karthik told Cricbuzz.

Importantly, Patidar made his IPL debut in 2021. The Madhya Pradesh’s right-handed batter was retained by the franchise in the IPL 2205 retentions ahead of the mega auction at a whopping price of INR 11 Crore.

In the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, Rajat Patidar had an excellent captaincy stint propelling his team to the final. He had amassed 428 runs from 10 matches at an excellent stroke rate of 186.0 and an average of 61.14, ending as the second best run-scorer of the campaign.

Though Patidar is appointed as the new captain of the franchise, he would receive enough guidance and support from the former franchise spinner and veteran batter Virat Kohli during the showpiece tournament.
