Mumbai Indians (MI) received a piece of bad news ahead of the IPL 2025 playoffs. Moving into the details, MI star spinner Vignesh Puthur has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL 2025 season on Thursday, April 30.
Notably, Puthur has developed a bone stress reaction in both shins with four matches still to be played in the league phase. As a replacement, Punjab leg-spinner Raghu Sharma, who was already part of MI’s support bowlers set-up, has been drafted into the main squad.
Importantly, the leggie has played a total of 11 first-class matches, nine List A games, and only three T20s for his state sides, Punjab and Pondicherry. He has scalped five four-fers and three 10-fers so far in his first-class career.
Notably, the leg-spinner had an excellent outing in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, scalping 14 wickets from eight games at an economy of 5.13. He ended the competition as the second leading wicket-taker for his team behind Arshdeep Singh.
It’s worth noting that the 32-year-old leg-spinner from Jalandhar has joined the Mumbai Indians set-up at his base price of INR 30 Lakh from the Registered Available Player Pool.
On the other hand, Vignesh Puthur has played five games this season for MI, pocketing six wickets. Moreover, he had an impressive IPL debut, scalping three wickets against the Chennai Super Kings.
It’s important to note that the ruled-out spinner will continue to be a part of the squad to focus on his recovery and rehab with the Mumbai Medical and Strength and Conditioning team, as stated in the franchise’s official statement.
So far, Mumbai Indians have played 10 games, winning six encounters and losing four. They have bagged five consecutive wins so far, while they bagged only one win in their first five games. They will next play against the Royals on Thursday, May 1 in Jaipur.
Mumbai have turned their season around with five straight victories after managing just one win in their first five matches. MI play their next match against the Rajasthan Royals on Thursday in Jaipur.
