The Chennai Super Kings’ hopes for this season ended with a loss against the Punjab Kings. This also happened to be the eighth loss of the season and the fifth straight loss at Chepauk, which used to be their den and marking one of their worst runs in the history of the tournament. This is also the first time that CSK has been out of the playoff race in consecutive seasons after they failed to qualify the previous season as well.
The win over Chennai in Chennai was quite a significant and crucial one for the Punjab Kings, marking their sixth victory this year. With 13 points to their name, Punjab shot up from the fifth place directly to second place, shifting Mumbai and Gujarat to third and fourth places, respectively. Chennai became the first team to be eliminated this season, while theoretically, every other team still got a chance.
