Punjab Kings all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the IPL 2025 season due to a fractured finger. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer has confirmed the news ahead of the game against CSK in Chennai on Wednesday, April 30.
Moreover, Iyer had confirmed that the team hasn’t thought of any replacement for now. Also, his countryman Marcus Stoinis, who is also part of the PBKS set-up this season, revealed that Maxwell suffered the injury before the team’s previous game against KKR.
"It's very unfortunate that he's got a fractured finger. To be honest, we haven't decided about the replacements yet so far but we are pretty strong in our team's mindset and what we have outside of our playing XI. We've got a variety of players who can win you matches. So we're going to stick to that as much as possible,” Shreyas Iyer said at the toss.
For the game against the Chennai Super Kings, PBKS replaced Glenn Maxwell with Suryansh Shedge in their playing XI, going ahead with only three overseas players.
"Unfortunately, Maxi's broken his finger. He broke it just before the last game at training. He didn't think it was too bad, but it ended up getting pretty bad. He had scans and yeah, the results weren't great. So unfortunately for Maxi, I think it's likely he's out for the tournament," Marcus Stoinis told Jiostar.
In the ongoing season, Maxwell had forgettable outings as he managed to score only 48 runs from seven games this year for PBKS. The franchise based out of Punjab has won six out of 10 games so far this season.
After the conclusion of the CSK game, PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting had asserted that the franchise is looking for a proper replacement. However, the search is a little bit tricky as PSL has coincided with IPL this year.
"We will be signing some replacements at some stage. We've got until our 12th game, so we have a couple of games to go yet. With the squad we've got, we're trying to find players in our squad anyway. We have got most of the basics covered. So we've got Azmatullah [Omarzai], Aaron Hardie who hasn't played yet, Xavier Bartlett who didn't play today. It's condition based. But when we get to Dharamsala he will come back into the reckoning up there, where the ball might swing and bounce a little bit more,” Ponting said.
"So we've actually been a little bit patient. Maxi's [injury] only been a couple of days, Lockie's has been two or three weeks. And with the PSL happening at the same time, there's not a lot of high quality replacements out there to be honest. So we've just been patient,” he added.
