Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a two-run defeat to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 52nd match of the IPL 2025 season at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3.
After losing the toss, RCB was tasked to bat first. Jacob Bethell (55) and Virat Kohli (62) stitched a 97-run stand for the first wicket. In the final overs, Romario Shepherd smacked 53* runs off 14 balls with four fours and six sixes to take the side's total to 213/5 in 20 overs.
In the chase, CSK opener Ayush Mhatre smacked 94 runs off 48 balls with nine fours and five sixes. Later, Ravindra Jadeja smacked 77* runs in 45 balls with eight fours and two sixes. However, Yash Dayal's brilliant last over propelled RCB to a two-run win.
MS Dhoni’s quotes after RCB vs CSK, Match 52
“When I went into bat, with the kind of deliveries and the runs needed, I felt I should've converted a couple more shots to ease the pressure. I take the blame. They got off to a good start, in between we pulled it back, but Romario Shepherd was brilliant. Whatever the bowlers bowled, he was able to get maximum runs.
We need to practice more. More often than not, when the batters start to connect, you have to rely on yorkers. Also the margin of error (yorkers provide) - so if you're looking for a perfect yorker, if that doesn't happen, a low full toss is the next best thing. It's one of the most difficult balls to hit.
Somebody like Pathirana, if the yorker isn't happening, he has got pace. He can bowl the bouncer and keep the batter guessing. At times if he's looking for yorkers, batters are looking to line it up and if he misses, batters have a chance of hitting. It can be used, but not all batters are comfortable playing it (the scoop).
If it comes naturally, then definitely. If not, it becomes difficult. It is something you need to practice in the new era. Most of our batters don't play the paddle shot. Jaddu plays it but he's more comfortable down the ground so he was backing his strength.”
Rajat Patidar’s quotes after RCB vs CSK, Match 52
“It was a tight game but credit goes to the batsmen the way they batted. The way the bowlers showed courage was tremendous. (On Yash) He is a main bowler of the team, he is a death specialist, it was a clear-cut thought to give the last over to Yash.
Last year he did well and I'm happy for him. I had confidence in Suyash also, till now he has been bowling good overs for RCB. That decision was 50-50 but I backed my bowler and he came good.
(On Shepherd) Not easy to go straightaway to hit those big sixes, he has the power and the skill. I'm enjoying his long sixes. (On Ngidi) He is quite an experienced bowler and has played a lot of white-ball cricket and I have confidence in him.
It's a positive to be on top, we are not aiming for the qualification, three matches are more crucial and we will try our best in all the three matches.”
